Monochromatic Looks: Denim On Denim

Vivian Ramirez / February 15, 2018

As we find ourselves between seasons, the debate for what to wear is getting louder on the daily. Weather calls for warm, reliable fabrics that can stand up to the harshest winds while all we want is to not cramp our personal style or get lost in a puffer jacket.

The answer to your fashion woes is easier than you think: Denim. A classic staple in closets around the world, denim is a versatile fabric that’s perfect for creating a head-to-toe look. (In fact, we’re mad we didn’t tell you about it sooner). Follow our easy tips for creating the best denim outfits that’ll have you singing the blues.

Distressed Jeans + Graphic Denim Jacket

Honey, we want you to Tear It Up!  Satisfy the edgy babe within with a pair of distressed skinny jeans and super hottt graphic jacket. For this look, we selected a denim jean jacket with an “I Do What I Want” graphic along the back, paired with a skinny jean. Notice that the distressing is along the front? Styling is a game of balance and you get to decide how that works for you. Finish the look with metallic booties and hoop earrings.

All-Denim Jumpsuit

New to the monochrome game? A one-piece style (such as a jumpsuit, dress, romper, or overalls) is the perfect denim on denim look for beginners! Why? Because it’s the easiest way to pull off a single color in one go! In this case, we opted for a denim jeans jumpsuit with an off-the-shoulder neckline. Once you have your denim one-piece, add accessories in order to keep your look from looking flat. Select a color that pops against the blue (or other denim color), such as a bright red or happy yellow. In this case, let’s avoid any matching denim accessories, lest you commit a fashion crime a la Justin & Britney in 2001 (we could use the bail money for clothes).

Mixed Denim Washes

Let’s mix things up with different shades of blue. Or black. Or white. Denim comes in a variety of colors, so why stick to just one? For this denim on denim look, we’re combining multiple denim washes to create a pleasing contrast. By selecting lighter denim washes, you have the power to highlight the areas you like while reserving darker washes to tone down others. We’re loving these medium wash skinny jeans with dark wash patches because they offer a laid-back, unstructured feel. Give yourself a little challenge and go for two completely different colors with black jeans with a cropped white jacket!

Mini Shorts + Cutoff Denim Vest

It’s time to in-vest in the future (…or in this case the past). This eighties-inspired look is bringing back the denim vest as a perfect daytime topper! Part eighties pop and part rock-and-roll, the cutoff denim vest is perfect for navigating your way through the music festival scene this summer. For this look, we layered a lace-up crop top with a denim vest. We finished the look with sequin-embroidered cutoff shorts and white sneakers. You can play with lengths as you select a longer vest that layers over your bottoms and leave them guessing what’s to come!

Classic Denim Jean Jacket + Skinny Jeans

Like chips and salsa, Ben & Jerry, or Beyonce and Jay-Z — some iconic duos are just meant to be. Enter the classic denim jean jacket and skinny jeans; a look that has graced the covers of glossy magazine pages and covers for decades. Of course, GS LOVE babes always do something with a little twist! Modernize this classic denim jean jacket and jeans combo with a bright graphic tee. Make it a little fun by twisting the hem into a knot-front detail. Finish it off with a colorful belt and mini bag, for a look that says “I’ve Arrived!”

Textures + Mixed Denim Prints

Girls just wanna have fun details! We’re loving the mix of textures and denim prints from this look! Textured accents, like embroidery or sequins, have the power to take any denim outfit from *yawn* to YAY. For this look, we opted for a star print button-down top with shiny sequin embroidery and a pair of ultra-distressed skinny jeans. But we didn’t stop there — we topped it off with a studded denim jean jacket with metallic grommets along the back (remember, balance). Your footwear should accent your look, like how this pair of metallic mule slides brings out the silver sequins from the top.
