Which makeup looks are best when styling a bright colored outfit? We linked up with makeup artist, Sanga Kim to create day and night makeup looks that will pair with S/S ‘17’s most vibrant shades.
Pair your brightly colored clothing with similar shades of makeup for a goddess like #MOTD.
MUA Sangha Kim started with a brown smoky eye to add depth to Kelly’s eyes without looking too dark. “Brown is a great neutral color because it goes with both cool and warm tones of the season,” says Kim. The versatility of a smoky brown eye should become a staple in anyone’s arsenal of go-to makeup looks — with just a flick of lipstick the entire look changes.
Kim then used a warm gold eyeshadow, both on the lid and under the eye, followed by smudging a reddish brown eyeshadow along the lashline to create the appearance of larger eyes. This step also provides an extra amount of sparkle to the eyes that are still appropriate for day.
Highlighter was applied to the inner corner of the eyes to make them appear more open and awake. Kim also applied at the tip of the nose to make it pop. This creates a more dramatic 3D appearance that is perfect for accentuating those details on the ‘gram.
For eyelashes, Kim chose a wispier style to keep the look more natural.
Kim’s PRO TIP | She says regardless of the eyelash look you’re going for to fan out the lash and “brush it out” with your fingers to create a more natural look.
Finally, Kim chose a coral colored blush and lip color to complete the look. The warmth of the coral created a friendly, approachable glam look during the day. She suggests reaching for a pink-hued color if you tend to match with cooler toned makeup. We used L.A. Colors High Shine Lip Gloss for this look which provided strong pigment for a glossy, super vivid pout.

Add the drama with a neutral smoky eye that pumps up the vivid colors of your #OOTN!
The key to creating a more dramatic look, Kim says, is to choose one feature to accentuate and keep the rest of the face neutral.
Starting with a fresh face Kim built up more foundation on Kelly’s skin to create a flawless finish and to allow the colors of the blush and bronzer to show up with more intensity.
Moving onto the eyes, Kim opted for smoky tones of dark greys and blues that would compliment a variety of brightly colored clothing choices. She picked darker neutral colors that would pair well with yellows, bright blues and greens.
She chose to stick with more neutral shades of blush and lip color to play up the intensity of the eyes for the night look. She recommends picking these shades in colors closer to your natural flushed cheeks and lips.
Still stuck on the idea of a brightly colored lip color? Tone down both colors of the eyes and lips to create a more even color palette throughout – it’s the best option if you must combine smoky eyes and bold lips.
